   2020 Annual Impact Report

This past year was a year of change for all of us as the COVID 19 pandemic and resulting shutdowns challenged us to do things differently.  At Apex Immigration Services, we turned our energy to finding new ways to serve our clients remotely when we could no longer safely meet face to face.

During this time, we adjusted our strategic initiatives to rethink and refocus on the things we could do well that would make the biggest positive impact for the low-income refugees and immigrants we serve.  First, we refined the scope of our services to concentrate on the core immigration benefit applications that would cover 90% of the needs of our clients and built a strong, referral network for the more complex cases that needed specific immigration legal experience.

Second, we forged new alliances and strengthened existing collaborative partnerships with community organizations serving the refugee and immigrant populations in the surrounding NC counties.  Our goal was to expand our reach and be able to offer low-cost, high quality immigration legal services to outlying counties in a way that meets the needs of clients where and how they live.

Lastly, we borrowed best practices and developed new ways of working to provide our immigration legal consults and client services remotely without missing a beat.  While client services were impacted during 2020, we were still able to help over 168 clients file for US immigration benefits so that they and their families could live and work in the United States.

The new Biden administration brings us hope that many of the immigration issues causing problems for refugees and immigrants will be addressed.  We are already seeing a significant increase in requests for help for DACA benefits and TPS benefits for people from Venezuela. We hold hope for more new policies that will benefit those seeking to live and work here in the US.

We recognize that with the newfound demand for immigration legal services, we will have to up our game and expand capacity to serve our immigrant and refugee clients.  To meet this challenge, we need to increase our operational capacity.  With your help, we will add new, paid paralegal positions in late Summer 2021.  Please consider giving a donation for 2021 and becoming a “sustaining” donor each year to allow us to maintain this critical service.

We are prepared to get to work and know we can’t do it without you as supporters, volunteers and donors to AIS.   Thank you for your support during the challenges of 2020 and for committing to help in 2021 and beyond.
